After nearly a decade long hiatus, The Cab is “back from the dead.” The beloved pop-rockers from Las Vegas made their highly anticipated return to the scene back in September with the release of their “Road to Reign: A Prelude” EP before returning to the stage, joining All Time Low as support on their “Everyone’s Talking!” tour and appearing on the lineup for for the When We Were Young Festival. Showing no signs of slowing down, the band has hit the road for their first headlining tour in over ten years. Their 24-date trek across the US, appropriately dubbed the “Back From The Dead” tour, celebrates not only the band’s return, but the release of their third studio album, Chasing Crowns. On Tuesday, May 26, The Cab returned to Arizona, packing the historic Nile Theatre in Mesa with fans ready for their first headlining show in the Valley in 13 years.
Before The Cab took the stage, alt pop/rock duo Jady had the opportunity to make their first impression on an Arizona audience. It was their Arizona debut, and they made the most of it. Joined on stage by two other band members, Jady set out to “warm up the stage and make this the best comeback tour The Cab has ever had.” Jady’s genre-bending tracks, including “Reanimate” and “Fragile,” had the audience hooked from the beginning. Frontman Jarrett Doherty joked that he had heard a rumor Arizona crowds didn’t know how to sing very loud before challenging the audience to prove him wrong during a cover of The Neighbourhood’s “Sweater Weather.” He also taught the crowd lyrics to “TMSTIDK” through a call-and-response segment, telling everyone that while they might not know their music yet, he wanted them singing along by the end of the night. The crowd happily accepted the challenge. Jady brought great energy to the stage, and their chemistry made for an entertaining opening set. Be sure to arrive early enough to catch Jady’s set! The duo is on tour with The Cab through June 4 before joining Red Leather overseas for their UK/European tour.

As showtime approached, the anticipation inside The Nile continued to build. Fans shared memories of The Cab with one another while others sang along to the songs blasting through the speakers as they eagerly awaited the evening’s main event. The house lights dimmed and the stage lights illuminated the room as Chasing Crown’s opening track, “Ultima Ratio Regum,” began to play. The Cab emerged to one of the loudest cheers of the night and wasted no time kicking things off with “Locked and Loaded” and “Temporary Bliss,” an early indication that the setlist would strike a nice balance between nostalgia and new material.
From the moment the band took the stage, the vibes in the room were celebratory. Longtime fans sang every word while newer songs from Chasing Crowns received just as enthusiastic a response. One of the most noticeable things about the crowd was the wide range of ages in attendance. Plenty of fans had grown up with The Cab’s music, but many had brought their children along to experience the band’s return.
Just as enjoyable as the music itself was watching how much fun the band members were clearly having onstage. After more than a decade away from headlining, they looked genuinely happy to be back. Bassist Joey Thunder was especially entertaining to watch, bouncing from one side of the stage to the other throughout the night and bringing a contagious energy to every song. Whether it was DeLeon interacting with the crowd, Alex Marshall and Chantry Johnson trading smiles across the stage, or Dave Briggs grinning behind the drum kit, the chemistry between the five musicians was impossible to miss.

Songs like “Sweet Kerosene,” “Back From The Dead,” and “ih8yourgutz” fit naturally alongside older favorites such as “La La,” “Vegas Skies,” and “Take My Hand.” During “La La,” frontman Alex DeLeon split the room into sections for a little friendly competition, encouraging each side to sing louder than the other, a challenge the crowd gladly accepted.
Midway through the set, the band showed off their love of pop music with a ‘90s medley featuring Backstreet Boys’ “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back),” Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time,” and *NSYNC’s “It’s Gonna Be Me.” DeLeon laughed while talking about how the band had once been described by critics as sounding like a boy band with guitars, sharing that they considered that to be the best compliment. The audience was also treated to a song the band had never played live previous to this tour. DeLeon told the crowd that if everyone could sing it loudly enough, they would play it. As he began to sing, the opening lyrics of “Intoxicated” were immediately shouted back by the crowd, and the band launched into the full song.
As much fun as the evening was, there were also moments that reminded everyone how unlikely this comeback once seemed. DeLeon shared the story of damaging his voice years ago while touring and being told by doctors that his singing career was over. He spoke about the years spent working to recover and get back to a place where he could perform again. Hearing that story while watching him command a stage, voice sounding better than ever, made the evening feel even more special.

As the main set was nearing its close, the band left the stage and allowed for a moment for drummer Dave Briggs to shine, as he powered through an impressive drum solo to Kendrick Lamar’s “DNA.” The solo hyped an already energetic crowd for the next track, fan favorite “Bounce.” As they prepared to close out the set with “Living Louder,” DeLeon delivered one of the evening’s most heartfelt speeches, reflecting on the friendships and sense of community that have formed around The Cab over the years. “We’ve gotten to know so many of you… so many of you have become friends — practically family — you guys are so kind and you are so loving and you respect everybody. I’ve never seen a group of people who are so loving and so okay with everybody being different and finding and choosing their own adventure in this life, and that’s what it is all about. We get one of these, so be kind to people and follow the path you were born to do… this song is about living louder.” The genuine sentiment was felt by the crowd, who sang along to every word of a song that has always felt like an anthem for embracing life on your own terms.
The band returned for an encore that featured a cover of Justin Bieber’s “YUKON” before moving into “Endlessly” and closing the night with “Angel With A Shotgun.” During the show’s finale, Alex Marshall brought a young fan onstage which was met with an overwhelming response from the crowd. The little one hyped the crowd before taking on the mic, singing the words alongside DeLeon who let her have her moment to shine. It was a moment that would no doubt become a core memory for that young fan and something the crowd would not soon forget either.
The Cab may have spent years away, but they’re showing no indication of letting up anytime soon. Chasing Crowns has given them a new chapter to build on, and the “Back From The Dead” tour is proving that this comeback is the real thing. If this tour is headed your way, don’t wait. Something special is happening on this run, and it’s definitely worth seeing for yourself.
